The writing process of Papéis da Prisão has as chronological borders the entry into the PIDE Prison Pavilion in São Paulo, Luanda (1961) and the exit from Tarrafal (1972). In his manuscript pages, the author wrote about his vision of the prison as a unique place to observe the diversity of the Angolan nation. Furthermore, the author expressed his political and literary projects, highlighted the community project of an Angola in collective resistance, and described his anguish and personal dreams.

In addition, the book also contains the introductory study “Papéis Críticas Avulso”, an interview with the author by Margarida Calafate Ribeiro and Roberto Vecchi, and a study of the chronology and spatiality of the work of José Luandino Vieira from the Papéis da Prisão made by Mónica V. Silva. The maps were produced by Nuno Simão Gonçalves.

In 2022, the first translation of José Luandino Vieira’s Papéis da Prisão was published in Italian, under the title Scritti dal Carcere – Quaderni di un Anticolonialista Angolano, by Meltemi. The announced version is shorter than the original. The translation was done by Elisa Scaraggi, with an introduction by Margarida Calafate Ribeiro and Roberto Vecchi.
